The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has engaged IIT Bombay to provide technical advisory and scientific assessment for managing legacy waste and fresh municipal solid waste at Jawaharnagar. The government has approved the proposal, sanctioning Rs 1.99 crore for consultancy charges over two years.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decided to engage the services of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay to provide technical advisory and scientific assessment for the management of legacy waste and the processing and disposal facility for fresh municipal solid waste (MSW) at Jawaharnagar.
On Thursday, Special Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Jayesh Ranjan cleared the GHMC proposal and issued government orders (GO Rt No: 393) to engage IIT, Bombay for a period of two years. An amount of Rs 1.99 crore will be paid to IIT Bombay towards consultancy charges, the G.O. stated.
The GO also stated that IIT, Bombay will render services including independent technical oversight and environmental monitoring, assessment of leachate management, groundwater, air quality and stormwater systems, recommendations for decentralisation and reduction of MSW inflow, scientific studies for feasibility of biomining of legacy waste, subject to specified preconditions, and advisory support during implementation.
The GHMC approached IIT, Bombay for providing technical advisory as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and deliberations held by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) along with GHMC and Telangana State Pollution Control Board. (TGPCB).
