Osmania University allocated Rs 10 crore for research and Rs 2 crore for women’s facilities in its annual budget. With expenditure projected at Rs 755.28 crore and receipts at Rs 723.02 crore, the university faces a Rs 32.26 crore deficit.

Hyderabad: To promote and support scholarly pursuits among the teaching faculty members, Osmania University (OU) has allocated Rs 10 crore exclusively for research activities in the university budget, which was presented here on Saturday.
Further, for the first time in the university’s history, Rs 2 crore was earmarked under a specific gender allocation category to enhance facilities for women across the university.
The university’s annual budget, presented by Prof S Jithender Kumar Naik, Dean, Faculty of Science and OSD to the VC, projected the expenditure at Rs 755.28 crore for the financial year, while the total estimated receipts are Rs 723.02 crore, reflecting a deficit of Rs 32.26 crore.
A significant portion of the expenditure is dedicated to salaries (56.58 per cent) and pensions (36.58 per cent) for teaching and non-teaching staff.
The State government, which recently presented the budget, reduced the block grants for the university Rs 42 crore for the financial year 2026-27 towards paying salaries of university employees and pensions of retired staff. The university’s block grants have come down from Rs 542.68 crore allocation in 2025-26 to Rs 500.89 crore in 2026-27.
“We have sought Rs 595 crore as a block grant from the government, but the university has been given Rs 500.89 crore. Since the government allocated Rs 100 crore for the Chakali Ilamma Women’s University, which was earlier part of the OU, in its budget for paying salaries, we are waiting for clarity from the government on whether or not OU should pay the Women’s University staff salaries. The deficit will come down if the women’s university staff salary is removed from the OU rolls,” a senior official said.
Prof Naik detailed plans for utilising the Rs 1,000 crore government grant to modernise academic buildings, hostels, and digital infrastructure, and to improve green cover across the campus.
OU Vice Chancellor Prof Kumar Molugaram, who presented a comprehensive report on the university’s recent achievements and future goals, said the university secured the 7th rank among State public universities and the 30th rank among all Indian universities in the NIRF-2025 rankings. It also maintained a strong presence in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
The VC thanked the government for sanctioning Rs 1,000 crore for campus infrastructure development and facelift.
New undergraduate programmes were introduced for the 2025-26 academic year, including B Com BFSI and BSc in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing & Quality. Additionally, the NBA has accredited five UG departments in the University College of Engineering until 2028, he said.
Earlier, the proceedings commenced with a condolence resolution moved by the Registrar, Prof G Naresh Reddy, to honour the late Prof MV Soundara Rajan, former Registrar of Osmania University, who passed away on February 27, 2026. The meeting was attended by Finance Officer Srinivas, Deans, Directors and Principals.
