Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the remarks on Sunday in a letter to the UN secretary-general, the president of the UN Security Council (UNSC), and the foreign ministers of the member states of the United Nations.
A day earlier, in a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump threatened to escalate strikes against Iran, saying that “areas and groups of people that were not considered for targeting up until this moment in time” will be put under serious consideration for “complete destruction and certain death.”
Iran’s top diplomat described the threat as brazen and a clear admission by Trump of committing war crimes against the Iranian nation at a time when US-Israeli military attacks have targeted schools, hospitals, residential buildings, infrastructure, sports halls, and relief centers across Iran, leaving more than 1,300 civilians dead.
The US-Israeli attacks have destroyed 9,669 civilian sites, including 7,943 residential units, 1,617 business centers, 32 medical and pharmaceutical centers, 65 schools and educational places, 13 buildings belonging to the Iranian Red Crescent Society, and several energy infrastructure facilities, Araghchi further said.
“Therefore, the remark made by the president of the United States is considered a clear admission of responsibility for the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Islamic Republic of Iran since February 28, 2026,” the top diplomat said.
He also said that while Iran will continue to uphold its right to legitimate self-defense until the UN Security Council fulfills its responsibility under the UN Charter for protecting international peace and security, Trump’s remarks give rise to the international responsibility of the United States as well as the international criminal responsibility of the American president.
Accordingly, the US is obligated to fully compensate for the damages resulting from the ongoing violations against Iran and its citizens, including any losses incurred, Araghchi added.
In the end, Foreign Minister Araghchi said that Islamic Republic of Iran firmly calls on the secretary-general of the United Nations and the Security Council to take appropriate measures, within the framework of their responsibilities for maintaining international peace and security, to put an end to the ongoing war crimes and to further ensure the accountability of the United States and its president.
Such action would help bring an end to the culture of impunity and prevent the further normalization of violations of international law, he said.
