Hyderabad: In a move to cut vehicular emissions and modernise city transport, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has unveiled a large-scale plan to convert diesel buses into electric vehicles and significantly expand its e-bus fleet in Hyderabad.

The corporation is focusing on retrofitting technology to transform ageing diesel buses into electric ones, a step officials describe as a first-of-its-kind initiative by a state-run transport utility in the country.

Tenders for the retrofitting project were floated in September 2025 and firms were subsequently finalised. Accordingly, while Sai Green Mobility has been assigned the task of converting 200 buses, Kalyani Powertrain Limited will retrofit nearly 40 buses.

The RTC has set a target of inducting 2,800 electric buses within Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road Hyderabad limits by 2027. Authorities expect the expansion of clean public transport to reduce private vehicle usage, curb pollution levels and improve overall public health.

At present, 325 electric buses are operating from six depots across the city, and another 175 buses are slated to join the fleet this year. Charging infrastructure is being expanded to 19 additional depots, while proposals have been prepared for 10 new depots and 10 charging centres. The infrastructure development is estimated to cost around Rs 392 crore.

A pilot project launched in 2023 saw a diesel bus from the Musheerabad depot successfully converted into an electric vehicle. The bus is currently running under the Uppal depot, demonstrating the viability of the retrofitting model.
