Lucknow, Mar 26 (UNI) Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday announced to field a prominent candidate from Lucknow parliamentary constituency against senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
“Lucknow seat is very important for the party. We have changed the city by going for an all round development through introduction of Metro, construction of international standard stadium, linking the state capital with Agra expressway, Gomti river front and others,” he claimed.
According to sources, SP might field veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha’s wife Poonam.
Talking mediapersons here, Mr Yadav said that it will be test to see if voters vote on caste or communal line or on development.
Neither the SP nor the Congress has announced their candidates for the Lucknow seat so far.
However, according to sources, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Jitin Prasada is expected to be the Congress candidate from Lucknow even though his name has been announced for Dhaurara seat.
On defection of SP’s MP Jaya Prada to BJP, the SP president commented, “it will have no impact on the party or the alliance.”
In Uttar Pradesh, SP, Bahujan Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have stitched an alliance and distributed seats among themselves. The state sends highest number of MPs to Lok Sabha—80.
Mr Yadav said that the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ poll agenda would be farmers, youths and the poor people of the country.
“Farmer is the most important issue, without them we can’t prosper. I had already said that farmer’s loans should be waived off without any terms and conditions. Youngsters should understand that the path BJP is taking people towards will not get them any employment,” he said.
